About Our Black Soldier Fly Larvae
Black soldier fly larvae, or calci worms, are dried whole with nothing added and nothing taken away. Their calcium content is far higher than that of mealworms, which is why keepers reach for them when hens are in lay and when reptiles need support building bone.
They store exactly like our mealworms. Keep the bag somewhere cool and dry, reseal it after each feed, and there is no refrigeration to think about. Birds that ignore a new food at first usually come round if you mix a handful through their regular feed for a week.
Every order ships free across Australia with GST included, and the price per kilo drops as the bag size goes up. If you keep chickens year round, the bulk bags are the better value.

What is the difference between calci worms and mealworms?
Calciworms is the common name for black soldier fly larvae. The main difference is calcium: calci worms carry a great deal more of it, so they suit laying hens and reptiles particularly well. Mealworms are higher in fat and tend to be the bigger crowd-pleaser with wild birds.
Which animals can eat them?
Chickens and other poultry, wild garden birds, reptiles, turtles, fish and bandicoots all take dried black soldier fly larvae. They are a treat rather than a complete feed, so serve them alongside a balanced diet.
Do they need to be dusted with calcium?
Usually not. That is the point of them. If your vet or reptile keeper has advised supplementing anyway, follow that advice rather than ours.
My birds will not touch them. What now?
That is common for wild birds with any new food. Mix a small handful through the feed they already know and increase the proportion over a week or two. Soaking them briefly in warm water also helps.
How should I store them?
Somewhere cool and dry, with the bag resealed after each use. No refrigeration is needed. Stored properly they will stay good for well over a year.
Are they safe for human consumption?
